EICR codes explained: C1, C2, C3 and FI

What each observation code on your Electrical Installation Condition Report means, and what you need to do about it.

  • Sebastian, JIB Approved Electrician
  • 18th Edition BS 7671 qualified
  • Inspection and testing qualified
  • NAPIT registered
  • Public liability insured
C1

Danger present

Risk of injury now, for example exposed live parts. The electrician makes it safe straight away, often by isolating the circuit. The report is unsatisfactory.

C2

Potentially dangerous

Not dangerous this minute, but could become so, for example missing earthing or damaged cables. Urgent remedial work is needed. The report is unsatisfactory.

FI

Further investigation

Something needs looking into without delay, for example a circuit that could not be traced. The report is unsatisfactory until it is resolved.

C3

Improvement recommended

Not dangerous and not to current standards, for example no RCD on some circuits in an older board. The report can still be satisfactory.

Satisfactory or unsatisfactory?

One C1, C2 or FI makes the whole report unsatisfactory. C3 items alone leave it satisfactory.

For a rented property, unsatisfactory means the landlord must have the work done within 28 days, or sooner if the report says so, and then confirm it in writing to the tenant and the council.

We fix them, whoever did the report

Send us your EICR and we quote the remedial work, even if another electrician did the inspection. You get a certificate for the repairs to keep with the report.

EICR code questions

What does C2 mean on an EICR?

C2 means potentially dangerous. It is not an immediate danger, but urgent remedial work is needed and the report is unsatisfactory until it is fixed.

Does a C3 fail an EICR?

No. C3 means improvement recommended. A report with only C3 items can be satisfactory, though fixing them is often good value.

What does FI mean on an EICR?

FI means further investigation is needed without delay. The report is unsatisfactory until the investigation is done.

How long do I have to fix C1 and C2 items?

Landlords in England must complete the work within 28 days of the inspection, or sooner if the report says so.

Can you fix items from another electrician's report?

Yes. Send us the report and we quote the remedial work and issue a certificate when it is done.
